Pick Up Patrol

We will begin using Pick Up Patrol on Monday, May 23rd to notify teachers of end of day transportation changes. This week we sent home letters on how to set up Pick Up Patrol on your phone or computer. You should have also received an invitation letter via email earlier this week. If you have not received the invitation letter, please contact Emily Smith in the ISLA office.

Dismissal time at ISLA is 4:15 pm. Teachers bring your child(ren) out at this time for parents to pick up no later than 4:20 pm. If parents are not here to pick up their child(ren) by 4:20 pm, they will go to Aventuras. Until now, we have not charged for children that go to Aventuras because their parents have not arrived, but starting Monday, May 23rd, we will begin charging the drop-in rate for after-school care. Please plan on arriving on time to pick up your students.

Spread the Word!

Help spread the word about ISLA and share your ISLA story at Niche and Great Schools. These are online school-search websites that invite parents and students to write reviews of their school. Due to our move from Hopkins to Edina, the school has a unique opportunity to reach students and families in new areas that might not be familiar with the school. ISLA is updating listings on these sites and we’d welcome your contributions as we’d like to maintain a robust waiting list for kindergarten, fill our upper grades to capacity, keep us on solid financial footing, and maximize our impact on the community. Gracias!

May Board Update

At the May 17tBoard meeting, the Board certified the results of the recent election for five open seats on the ISLA Board of Directors.  The school community has elected the following individuals to serve three-year terms, on the Board, beginning July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2025:

  • Heidi Estrada
  • Kyle Orwick
  • Lina Pinto Perez
  • Ravi Shanbhag
  • Andrew Sundal

The Board also approved the following officer roles:

  • Lida Etemad – Chair
  • Heidi Estrada – Vice-Chair
  • Kyle Orwick – Treasurer
  • Jennifer McCormack – Secretary

The proposed budget for the 2022-2023 fiscal year, as presented by the Chair of the Finance Committee, was a key agenda item and discussed at length.  Areas of focus included staffing needs, the school’s lease payment (which will increase next year), the cost of transportation, and ways in which to offset expenses.

If you are interested in attending a Board meeting, the Board meets on the third Tuesday of each month beginning at 6:30 p.m.  The school calendar includes a zoom link to join the meeting remotely or feel free to attend the meeting at the school (location will be posted at the entrance of the school).  You may also send feedback to the Board via email to: board@isla.school.

Contact Julia ptochair@isla.school or Lindsay Ptotreasurer@isla.school with questions. Don’t worry! Lots of support available to incoming board members!

ISLA Affiliated Building Company Opportunities

Are you interested in getting more involved with the school?  Do you want to help budget and prioritize improvement projects?  Do you have some basic financial aptitude? The ISLA Affiliated Building Company is looking for a Treasurer.  Now that major construction is over the time commitment is a few hours per month (a monthly 30 minute vendor meeting, quarterly full board meetings, etc.).

Interested?  Please contact Brian Linne at blinne@isla.school.

Host Families and Aunt/Uncle Families Needed Next School Year for Our Amazing LAs!

ISLA is hoping to have 9 interns for the 2022-2023 school year, which means 18 host families and 9 aunt and uncle families are needed! We still need several more families to host in fall and more in spring as well.

https://forms.gle/nJTqJcRsEw9y9fMG6

We are starting to gather interested host families right now. Fall semester typically hosts from mid August to mid January. If you're looking to form a deep connection with an intern, this spot is for you! You will be able to introduce them to Minnesota and American culture, while getting to know them and their culture as well.

Spring semester runs from mid January to the end of the school year, and hosts can start to apply for this spot now as well. Interns are often busier and more independent during the spring semester, but hosts will still see some amazing benefits (like their kids' Spanish exploding, enjoying learning about other cultures, and making life-long friendships).

All that is required from hosts is a separate bedroom and a loving family. ISLA PTO provides a nice stipend for host families to help offset any costs families incur by adding another family member, and PTO also pays for interns' school lunches. Our LAs bring so much to ISLA, and so much more to the families who get to know them! You won't regret it!
